Lecture 1.3 (update)

For Wednesday’s lecture we’ll be finishing up on Marshall McLuhan and Understanding Media and moving on to discussing the early history of communications research.

Some things to look for in the Czitrom selection you’ll be reading:
Pay attention to the motivations these different scholars had for studying media and the motivations for their different methodologies. What are the different debates between scholars or groups of scholars? For example, what were the critiques (theoretical and methodological) the Frankfurt School had with the so-call “Administrative Research”?
Also pay attention to the academic and non-academic backgrounds of these communications scholars. What is the relationship between government propaganda efforts, corporate advertising and communications studies?

See you tomorrow.
